What is French Onion Soup?
French onion soup is a beef broth based soup, with caramelized onions and spices that is served with a piece of bread placed in it and topped with cheese. To keep it low-carb we have ditched the bread and used pork rinds instead. If you want to use bread you can but make sure it is a keto bread to keep the carbs low.
Is French Onion Soup Keto?
This low carb french onion soup is totally keto! In place of the normal slice of bread we have changed things up and used pork rinds instead. If you are not a fan of pork rinds you can opt to leave them out. This keto version tastes just as good as regular french onion soup but with out the worry of high carbs.
What is the Best Cheese for French Onion Soup?
If you are worried about french onion soup cheese there are a few options. Personally I love the taste of Gruyere cheese on french onion soup. However if you can’t find it, you can use provolone cheese instead of the Gruyere Cheese when making this soup. It will still taste amazing, I promise! If you are struggling to find either one, swiss cheese will work in a pinch.
What are the best onions to use for Low Carb French Onion Soup?
The great thing about this soup recipe is that you do not have to be too picky with the onions that you use. You can use sweet onions, yellow onions or shallot onions. If you want to you can also use a combination of the 3. The most important thing is that you have thinly sliced onions in your soup.
How to Serve Keto French Onion Soup
When eating homemade french onion soup I like to use a fancy soup bowl or Ramekin to put my soup in. You can use a regular soup bowl. But again, we like to be fancy in our house when we have this soup, so we stick to using our ramekins.
Whenever I am serving soup I like to also make Cheddar Keto Biscuits or Keto Copy Cat Red Lobster Biscuits.

Tips for Making this recipe
Thinly sliced onions. You want to have thin slices of onions when you are making this soup.
Do not stir the onions right away. When you are cooking the onions you do not want to stir them for the first 4 minutes.
